Tyndall Effect — Blue Discoloration Under Skin

FOS 20-50☆☆☆☆Revision Difficulty

A bluish discoloration visible under thin skin, most commonly in the tear trough area. Caused by HA filler placed too superficially.

Why It Happens

HA filler placed too superficially in thin-skinned areas, light scattering through translucent gel.

Severity

Mild to moderate. FOS scores 20-50. Primarily cosmetic concern but indicates improper placement.

Treatment Solutions

Hyaluronidase dissolution is effective for fresh cases. For long-standing Tyndall effect, ultrasound-guided micro-extraction provides more precise removal.

Why Traditional Treatment Fails

Hyaluronidase may partially dissolve but often leaves residual blue tint. The HA is in the superficial dermis — enzyme access is inconsistent at this shallow depth.

The Liusmed Approach

Precise ultrasound-guided superficial extraction. The shallow depth actually makes micro-extraction easier — filler is close to the surface and can be directly aspirated.

Dr. Liu's Perspective

"Tyndall effect is actually one of the easier problems to fix. The filler is right there under the skin — we can see it and reach it. The key is not going too deep and damaging the delicate under-eye tissue."

Recovery Timeline

5-7 day recovery. Minimal bruising. Blue discoloration resolves immediately after extraction. Final skin tone normalization in 2-4 weeks.

FAQ

Will the blue color go away on its own?

In most cases, no. HA filler can persist for years, and the Tyndall effect will remain until the filler is removed or dissolved.
